Sonic Beer Blog #17: Amherst Brewing Massachusetts Lager

Sometimes you just want to drink beers. Just destroy the hell out of one beer after another. No time to analyze notes and hops and lacey heads. Just pound it down and crush the can. If you understand what I’m talking about then Amherst Brewing’s Massachusetts Lager is here for your crushing pleasure. This is a no bullshit lager with character. Brewed with the hard partying University Of Massachusetts undergrads in mind. This lager was drinking a keg in an elevator in one of the Southwest towers and charging a buck per cup while doing it. This Lager got naked at the Spring Concert and woke up naked under a table at the Student Union. This lager heaved up those slices it woofed down at Antonio’s all over that fat campus cop’s shoes.

It smells of grains, malt and a hint of date and apricot. The taste is that of the Pioneer Valley; cool and crisp. Like the air the last time you did the “Walk Of Shame” from some off campus sty back to Northeast. While your chugging you might notice malt and grassy flavors with a medium body. This session is great for pre, during, and post game imbibing. Any self respecting Minuteman would agree, this is a beer of action. No bitterness, no pine and grapefruit rind, just a solid session beer that kicks the crap out of any “borg”.

The Sonic Pairing: I have a formula that has been proven in several laboratory situations: A case of beer + Any AC\DC album = Party! I think their biggest album, “Back In Black”, would fit loudly into that equation. With it’s relentlessly hammering riffs and the raging vocals of their freshman singer, at the time, Brian Johnson, who had a giant Scottish style sheaf on his shoulder.(seriously, trying to fill the shoes of the recently deceased Bon Scott must have been terrifying) This is a plug it in, turn it up, and start drinking kind of record. And this lager must be enjoyed at the highest volume possible. So “Shake A Leg” and head over to The Hanger Pub and “Have A Drink On Me”(actually I can’t pay right now, maybe next week) After a few you’ll be screaming “Hells Bells” and maybe calling your Dad for bail money.

All beers featured in the Pike Sonic Beer Blog can be found at Wachusett Wine And Spirits in West Boylston and Worcester.
