Sonic Beer Blog #8: Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company Funk Punch Blackberry And Blueberry

Let’s talk about Sour beers for a second. There are some sours that, after the first sip, one of your eyelids starts fluttering like a butterfly stuck in the beak of a Blue Jay. Eventually that whole side of your face is shuddering and you’re waving your arms in the air like your on fire. Or, it’s so spectacularly not sour and has the essence of a puddle on a brewery floor. At least that’s been my sour experience.

This sour is not either of those. Greater Good’s Funk Punch With Blackberries Blueberries is not exactly in the middle, but more on the lighter sour side. Enough to make this a smoother sour experience. While there is berry in the first whiff the first sip from this murky pink brew brings tart apple, lemon, with the berry experience to balance it out. The finish is crisp, dry and highly carbonated with a hint of vanilla. There is absolutely no indication that this is 8.1 ABV. Which makes it even more fun! This would be even better if it were 90 degrees out because it is enchantingly refreshing.

The Sonic Pairing: Just because it has “Funk” in the name doesn’t necessarily mean I have to pair it with something funky…but I did anyway. The latest Red Hot Chili Peppers album, “Return Of The Dream Canteen” has the same playful flavor with just enough sourness to tame the funk. While there are some dark parts to this collection there is lingering sweetness that brightens me up when it hits the “Tippa My Tongue” I am definitely going to “Reach Out” for another to attain a “Bag Of Grins“.

All beers featured in the Sonic Beer Blog can be found at Wachusett Wine And Spirits in West Boylston and Worcester.
